SAN JOSE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball (23-29, 9-20 Mountain West) split its doubleheader against San Jose State (13-42, 6-23 MW) on Friday at Municipal Stadium. The Rebels dropped their series opener with the Spartans 3-0 but bounced back to win the nightcap 9-3.
Strong pitching dominated the first game, as neither team was able to plate a run in the first three innings of the first game. SJSU got on the board first in the fourth inning and plated a run in the fifth and seventh innings.
UNLV's best chance came in the eighth inning when the Rebels had the bases loaded with one out, but a strikeout and a fly out to right field ended the threat.
Edgar Montes led UNLV from the plate, collecting two of the team's four hits in the game. He finished 2-for-3 with a walk.
D.J. Myers (2-4) was saddled with the loss, despite having a quality start. He allowed three runs, two of which were earned, on seven hits in 6.2 innings of work. He also struck out five and allowed one walk. Bryan Bonnell finished the game, allowing one hit in 1.1 innings and had two strikeouts.
The Rebels' bats woke up in the second game as they collected 14 hits. The team plated six runs in the first four innings and secured the game by scoring three insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning.
Andrew Yazdanbakhsh and Nick Rodriguez each went 3-for-4 to lead UNLV from the plate. Yazdanbakhsh also finished with two runs scored and an RBI while Rodriguez recorded an RBI. Morgan Stotts also finished with multiple hits, going 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI in the game.
Ben Wright (1-2) earned his first collegiate win after didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning. He finished the game allowing three runs, all of which were unearned, on three hits in 5.0 innings of work. He also recorded three strikeouts to go with two walks. Joey Lauria was impressive in relief, as he kept SJSU off the scoreboard and allowed three hits in 3.0 innings. He faced 13 batters and he struck out six of them while giving up only one walk. Zack Hartman came in for the ninth inning and allowed only one hit while striking out two.
The Rebels and Spartans will wrap up their respective seasons on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. PT. Blaze Bohall (6-3, 3.70 ERA) is expected to get the nod for UNLV, while the probable starter for SJSU is Hilario Tover (1-5, 9.80 ERA).
