May 18, 2015 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - New Rebel Football head coach Tony Sanchez recently visited Carlene Hardin's third grade class at John S. Park Elementary School to commemorate them winning the Eighth Annual UNLV Coaches Challenge.
Since 2007, the Southern Nevada Health District in partnership with UNLV Athletics and the Clark County School District has organized the UNLV Coaches Challenge, a four-week program for grades 2-5 designed to encourage students to be more active and eat fruits and vegetables. Classes compete with all the other participating classrooms in their grade to win the grand prize - a classroom visit by a UNLV head coach.
More than 10,000 Clark County School District elementary school children from 87 schools took part in this year's Coaches Challenge. Participating classes collectively earned a total of 300,719 points, the most since the program began in 2007. Each point equals a serving of fruit or vegetables or 15 minutes of physical activity.
