LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team (25-28 overall, 11-11 Mountain West) suffered a 10-2 loss in six innings of play to the Fresno State Bulldogs (38-14, 18-4) Thursday evening at Eller Media Stadium. The Bulldogs pulled away from the Rebels in the sixth with four runs after they built a four-run cushion - 6-2 - over the first three innings.
FS opened up the affair with four tallies in its first at-bat off of three hits and help from a Rebel miscue. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out against Morgan Ettinger (10-10), who walked in the first run off the game with a free pass to Paige Gumz. Alyssa Villalpando followed the walk with a two-run single, while Bria Kennedy capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
UNLV got one run back in the home half of the inning. Garie Blando got things started with a single to the shortstop, Whitney Smith, and then worked her way to third base after a groundout by Fahren Glackin and a single by Samantha Jaurez. Emily Haslinger then had a fielder's choice to produce the run for the Scarlet & Gray.
The Bulldogs were able to push one across in both the second and third behind an RBI single from Kierra Willis and a solo home run by Kennedy, respectively.
The Rebels used the long ball to score in the third, as well, with a round-tripper from Emily Haslinger.
The game remained a 4-2 affair until the sixth when FS used a combination of two hits and two errors to extend its lead to eight runs. The first tally was off an error, while another was a result of an RBI groundout by Smith and two more were off a homer by Breanna Moss.
A trio of Bulldogs scattered three hits apiece as Moss, Villalpando and Malia Rivers achieved the feat. The first two as well as Kennedy had two RBI in the win.
Jill Compton (27-10) picked up the win in complete-game fashion. Compton, who struck out eight, threw six innings and was touched for two runs off of five hits.
Ettinger (10-10) was saddled with the loss in three innings of her start. She allowed six runs (five earned) off of 10 hits and one walk. She gave way to Sydney Mundell, who entered the circle in the fourth. Mundell surrendered four runs (three earned) off of four hits and a walk.
UNLV and FS resume their series Friday evening at 6:00 pm at Eller Media Stadium. The two will play their final regular-season contests Saturday, which will be "Senior Day" at the ball park and see the team recognize Juarez, Lexie McKinnon and Emilie Valadez for their time with the Rebel program.
