EUGENE, Ore. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV track & field got a good showing from its trio of freshmen at the 2015 USATF Outdoor Junior Championships Friday at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon. MacKenna Howard led the Rebel contingent with a fifth-place finish in the shot put behind a throw of 49-7.25 (15.12m). On the track, Taylor Pegram was seventh in the 100m hurdles final (13.84) and Drea Austin (Las Vegas/Foothill HS) was eighth in the 100m (11.84).
Although Howard's event was comprised of three throws, Pegram and Austin had to qualify for their respective finals by virtue of advancement through a preliminary round. Pegram and Austin were both eighth in the prelims with the former running a 14.00 in the 100m hurdles, while the latter ran a time of 11.73 in the 100m.
In the USATF's Outdoor Championships' portion of the meet Lekeisha Lawson finished 15th overall in the 100m (11.26). Lawson, who ran for the Rebels from 2006-09, registered a personal-best time of 11.06 in the event's prelims Thursday.
Despite the senior and junior versions of the 100m coming to a close for both Austin and Lawson, the pair is entered in the 200m preliminaries Saturday. Lawson will take to the track at 12:30 pm (heat five), while Austin must wait until 5:32 pm for her race.
The fifth and final representative for UNLV will also descend upon Hayward Field Saturday. Amanda Bingson won three Mountain West hammer throw titles during her four-year tenure (2009-12) as a Rebel. The Las Vegas native and Silverado High School graduate enters Saturday's hammer throw (12:15 pm: heat two) as the two-time defending USATF champion and American record holder (248-5/74.92m). Just one month after she completed her collegiate career, she finished second in the hammer at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials and in turn earned the chance to represent the United States at the London Olympics.
