LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV's Carol Yang picked up another ranked win as the Rebels compiled an impressive 5-2 mark in singles and doubles Sunday to close out the 14th annual Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The Rebel duo of Yang and Aiwen Zhu started the morning by losing their semifinal doubles match to the nation's second-ranked team of Hayley Carter and Whitney Kay of North Carolina, 6-1. The Tar Heel combo would then go on to down the country's fourth-ranked duo from USC to take the title, 6-3. Carter, ranked sixth in the nation as an individual, also won the singles crown later in the day by defeating No. 42 Giuliana Olmos of USC, 6-1, 7-6.

The hosts, however, made their noise in the added matches portion of the event, as Yang rallied to upset 76th-ranked Spencer Liang of Florida, 2-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-6) in a super-tiebreaker. Aiwen Zhu also corralled herself a Gator, topping Brianna Morgan 6-4, 6-4; Anna Bogoslavets defeated Kristen Wiley of UCLA, 6-3, 6-2; and Cristina Moroi downed Elizabeth Yao of Stanford, 6-3, 6-2. Also, the doubles team of Paola Artiga and Mercedes Lopez won an added match vs. Stanford's Yao and Paulette Wolak, 7-5.

"This was a great start for the Lady Rebs," said UNLV head coach Kevin Cory. "When you are competing against players from the top programs in the nation and you're holding your own, it's a big deal. I think we will continue to improve and we are looking forward to this semester."

UNLV is now off until opening dual-match play by hosting New Mexico State on Jan. 29 starting at 10 a.m. Admission is free of charge.
