Oct. 6, 2016 Pacific Palisades, CA (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV Tennis senior Carol Yang stunned the nation's 21st-ranked player to open singles play Thursday in the Main Draw of the 2016 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships being played at the Riviera Country Club.
Yang, ranked No. 103, downed Caroline Brinson of powerhouse Georgia, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to advance to the Round of 16 of the elite event. She will now play No. 27 Kourtney Keegan of Florida, who rolled past second-ranked Luisa Stefani of Pepperdine, 6-3, 6-3, in her opening effort.
"There were some long, grueling points and both players competed very yard," said UNLV assistant coach Tim Nichols, who is overseeing the Rebel contingent in California. "After they were at 2-2 in the third set, Carol really raised her level of play, which was the difference today."
