Rebel Football Pair Honored By Conference

Nov. 14, 2016

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV junior quarterback Kurt Palandech has been named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week and senior defensive back Torry McTyer was the pick for MW Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

This marks the first time UNLV Football has won honors both for offense and defense in the same week since Sept. 24, 2007, when running back Frank "The Tank" Summers and linebacker Beau Bell were both tabbed following the Rebels 27-0 victory over Utah.

Palandech, who was making his first start of the season, is the first Rebel to earn the conference award on the offensive side of the ball since wide receiver Devante Davis on Sept. 30, 2013. He is also the first UNLV quarterback to be named since Caleb Herring on Sept. 16, 2013.

The former junior college transfer out of Plainfield, Illinois, set career highs in completions, passing yards, touchdowns and rushing yards as he helped UNLV upset Wyoming 69-66 in triple overtime on Saturday. Palandech completed 20 of 32 passing attempts for 252 yards and three touchdowns and no interceptions while leading all rushers in the game with 157 net yards on 16 carries. His biggest play may have been a 76-yard touchdown run that gave UNLV the lead immediately after Wyoming had gone ahead on a long punt return for a score. He then completed a two-point conversion pass to give his team a seven-point advantage in what would go down as the third-highest combined scoring game in FBS history.

McTyer, a four-year letterwinner out of Los Angeles' Cathedral High School, had three passes defended to go with one tackle. He broke a string of 19 quarters without the UNLV defense grabbing an interception by picking off the Wyoming quarterback in the fourth quarter at the Rebel 23-yard line. His second interception of the day and third of the season came during the Cowboys' third overtime possession. McTyer tipped a pass away from the intended receiver and grabbed it out of the air at the UNLV one-yard line, which led to the Rebels kicking the game-winning field goal. McTyer leads the MW and is second in the nation with 1.7 passes defended per game.

The cornerback is the first UNLV defensive back to win the MW honor since All-American safety Jamaal Brimmer on Oct. 11, 2004.

UNLV next travels to play No. 22/23 Boise State on Friday on ESPN2 starting at 6 p.m. PT. The regular-season finale vs. Nevada, Reno is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 26 at Sam Boyd Stadium. Tickets are available now by calling (702) 739-FANS or visiting unlvtickets.com.
