LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened their home schedule on Friday night by taking on the Utah Utes from the Pac-12 Conference, dropping both meets but still claiming nine event wins in the process. The Rebels women (0-2) dropped to the Utes by a 178-122 score, while UNLV's men lost by a 192-100 margin at Buchanan Natatorium.

"On the men's side tonight we ran into a deep program and unfortunately we didn't really answer that call," said UNLV head coach Ben Loorz. "When you get swept in some events that's not good. We have to respond better to those challenges in the future, though our sprint groups did perform well tonight. On the women's, we had success winning quite a few events tonight and that's a good sign going up against a Pac-12 squad. We stepped up and raced today. Now we have a quick turnaround, taking on BYU tomorrow at 11 am, so we just need to make sure we're good to take care of business."

Two double-event winners highlighted the women's efforts. It began with Kyndal Phillips in the 100 back, as she won easily in a time of 56.88. Phillips then added a second win in the 200 back, out-touching Utah's Mallori Allen by .04 seconds with a mark of 2:04.52. The other double-winner on the night was Kristina Hendrick, with first place times in the 100 breast (1:03.61) and the 200 IM (2:05.80). Also posting wins for UNLV were Ida Schutt in the 500 free (5:02.39) and Myka Fielding on the 3-meter board (267.68).

The story on the men's side was the return of Tom Paco-Pedroni, as after a year away he claimed two sprint free wins. First, the 50 free, was won by Paco-Pedroni in a time of 20.14, part of a 1-2-3 sweep in the event as he was followed by Kasey Foley and Or Sabatier. Next, he won the 100 free in 43.41, while again Foley placed second in the race.

Paco-Pedroni, Sabatier, Foley and Murilo Gustineli would combine for the final win of the night, as their 200 free relay squad won in a time of 1:22.16.

The Rebels are back in action Saturday morning with an 11 am meet against BYU.
