ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV track & field team had eight student-athletes in a total of four events advance to Saturday's final rounds after their efforts in Friday's preliminaries at the 2016 Mountain West Indoor Championships. Additionally, Cortney Miller picked up one point in the weight throw to push the Rebels' total to four, which places them 11th through two days of competition at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Miller finished eighth overall with a toss of 58-4 (17.78m).
"It was not the best of starts for us," said head coach Yvonne Wade. "We were relying on more points going into the final day, but those who did make it are ready to fight so we will be relying on them to get it done."
The Scarlet & Gray will be well represented in the finals of the 60m, 200m, 800m and 60m hurdles. Drea Austin ran the third-fastest time -- also a personal-best -- in the 200m (23.99), while she was sixth in the 60m (7.53). Austin will be joined by Asia Cooper in the 60m (fifth overall, 7.51 -- season-best time) and Laura Anuakpado in the 200m (7th, 24.50).
The Rebels got back-to-back placements in the 60m and 800m Friday. In the 60m, Taylor Pegram tied the program's fifth-best all-time indoor performance with a time of 8.59, which was good enough for fifth Friday, while Joniece Ervin was sixth overall in a personal-best 8.63. In the 800m, Auzsane Crowe-Carter and Mandy Chitwood were fifth (2:09.54) and sixth (2:09.79 PB), respectively.
UNLV will have a chance to score points in the shot put, high jump, 3000m and 4x400m relay as well as the four competitions the aforementioned eight qualified for Friday.
