March 12, 2016 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Week One of the 2016 UNLV Football spring season came to a close Saturday as the team entered Rebel Park wearing full pads for the first time.
Basking in a glorious day of weather, the squad turned in a spirited effort before enjoying a well-deserved day off on Sunday.
Head coach Tony Sanchez was pleased overall with his team's work.
"It's been a steady progression this week," Sanchez said. "The guys did a nice job staying on their feet. We did have a couple of turnovers in the scrimmage situation but overall, it was a good day. I'm extremely happy with the progress we made all week. What I like is the maturity of this group. They understand that we are getting better but we are not where we want to be -- so there's a continual progression that we need to attack."
Asked to name some players who stood out in Week One, the second-year head coach said he had plenty of options.
"(Sophomore defensive back) Darious Mouton did some things, (redshirt freshman wide receiver) Darren Woods keeps getting better every day. (Senior center) Will Kreitler is Will Kreitler. (Senior defensive end) Jeremiah Voloaga has shown glimpses of how special he can be and (senior linebacker) Tau Lotulelei is a great football player. Really, we look good all over the place and we look bad all over the place -- just have to keep working!"
Asked about the local weather conditions this week, Sanchez gushed.
"Are you kidding me with this weather? Viva Las Vegas!"
UNLV will return to the field Monday at approximately 8 a.m. The team will go Monday, Wednesday and Friday before breaking for Spring Break. All practices are open to the public, with restricted viewing areas and a rule of no electronic communication devices while at Rebel Park.
The Spring Showcase is set for Saturday at Noon on April 9 at the Peter Johann Memorial Soccer Stadium on campus. Admission is free of charge for the family-friendly event.
