LOOKING BACK A WEEK
UNLV defeated San Diego State twice to take the conference-opening series and tie for second place in the conference. The Rebels have won the two of the past three series against the Aztecs.
A two-run homer in the fifth inning and six UNLV softball errors helped San Diego State to a 6-2 win on Thursday night. San Diego State broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning and scored four unanswered runs to end the game. The Rebels jumped out an early lead in the second inning. Jadelyn Yadao-Valdez dropped a single right in front of the center fielder to knock in Kwyn Cooper. Cooper had a no-hitter broken up in the fifth inning with two outs on a single to right center. The next San Diego State batter hit a two-run homer that allowed the Aztecs to take a 2-1 lead. A fielding error in the sixth inning allowed the go-ahead run to be scored. In the seventh inning, a balk scored one run after a throwing error allowed runners to get on second and third base. The Aztecs then hit a single to left field for the second run of the inning. After advancing the baserunner to third, a squeeze bunt knocked in the final run of the game.
UNLV evened the three-game series with a 4-2 win on Friday. The Rebels jumped out to an early lead in the second inning with two runs scored. With the infield crowding in for Yadao-Valdez, she hit a ball just far enough over the shortstop's extended glove at the edge of the infield to knock in Francesca Foti for the first run of the game. A grounder to second base by Garie Blando allowed Cooper to race home for the second run. UNLV extended its lead to three runs in the fifth inning. Alyssa Cordova singled up the middle to bring home Janine Petmecky. San Diego State got its first run of the game in the sixth inning, but the Rebels pushed the lead back to three runs in their turn at the plate in the sixth inning. Yadao-Valdez hit a grounder to second base to score Myranda Bueno. San Diego State's rally in the seventh inning fell short with only one run scored.
The Rebels the Aztecs 7-2 on Saturday afternoon in the rubber match to take the series. UNLV took the initial lead for the third straight game in the second inning with two runs scored. Courtney Beavers knocked in Cordova with a single to the shortstop. With Alyssa Batastini up to bat, Beavers broke for second to steal the base and allowed Foti to run home before she was tagged out. San Diego State tied the game up in the next inning. UNLV took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning. Yadao-Valdez scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Blando. With two outs Foti then smacked a three-run homer, her second of the year, that just stayed inside of the left field pole to give the Rebels a 6-2 lead. The Rebels added an insurance run in the fifth inning when DePippo stole third base with two outs and ran home on an errant throw. Petmecky (3-3) earned her second straight win against San Diego State after relieving Batastini last night and gave up six hits and no walks with two strikeouts in 4.2 scoreless innings.
