SAN JOSE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV softball dropped a doubleheader to San Jose State losing 11-3 in the first game in five innings and 9-1 in the second game in five innings on Tuesday afternoon at SJSU Field. The Rebels drop to 18-16, 2-3 while San Jose State improves to 13-17, 2-0.
San Jose State took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of the first game. The Spartans scored on a two RBI-double to right center with two outs.
The Spartans then took a five run lead the next inning. With one out San Jose State scored on a RBI-single up the middle. A second RBI-single through the right side came right afterwards, and the Spartans scored their final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to left field.
UNLV cut its deficit to two runs in the fourth inning. With one out Alyssa Cordova doubled to right center and advanced to third base on a passed ball. After Francesca Foti walked Kwyn Cooper singled through the left side to knock in Cordova. With two outs Alyssa Batastini hit the ball just far enough that the second baseman couldn't make a leaping catch to allow Foti to race home for the second run. Jadelyn Yadao-Valdez was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and a fielding error by the shortstop on a groundball allowed Cooper to score.
San Jose State then scored six unanswered runs, four in the fourth inning and two in the fifth, to end the game with no outs in the fifth inning.
Cooper was the starting pitcher and lasted 1.1 innings, surrendering five hits, five runs (two earned) and two walks. Petmecky relieved Cooper in the second inning and pitched 2.2 innings, giving up six hits, four runs (three earned) and no walks. Ettinger gave up the final two runs in the fifth inning on one hit and two walks.
The Spartans beat the Rebels in five innings once again in the second game of the day. San Jose State took the lead for good in the second inning. After a fielding error a two RBI-triple right center gave the Spartans two runs.
San Jose State scored one run in the third inning and four in the fourth to push the game farther out of UNLV's reach. Two errors in the fourth inning allowed the Spartans to put extra base runners on and pad its lead.
UNLV got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning. Jamie Hatch reached on a fielding error by the third baseman to lead off the inning and stole second base. A double by Yadao-Valdez to left center scored Hatch.
The game ended with two straight RBI-singles by San Jose State.
Batastini got the start in the circle and threw two innings, giving up four hits, three runs (one earned) and one walk with one strikeout. Cooper relieved her in the third inning and allowed four hits, four runs (three earned) and two walks. Once again Ettinger finished out the game and gave up three hits, two runs and one walk.
UNLV switched its starting lineup in the second game, and Chrissi Omalza and Kylie Rasmussen got their second starts of their career, with Omalza starting at catcher for the first time ever. Jamie Hatch also got her first career start.
Yadao-Valdez was the only Rebel to have two hits in the game in addition to her RBI.
UNLV and San Jose State will close out the series tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
