Yang Nabs Her Third Player Of The Week Honor

March 30, 2016

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV standout Carol Zi Yang was named the Mountain West Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the third time this season, the league announced Wednesday.

Yang, who is a junior seeing her first action for the Rebels this semester, played in just one team match last week but turned in a memorable performance for those who were at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on Saturday.

Playing in the No. 1 position, the native of China first teamed with Aiwen Zhu to take a 6-2 doubles victory that helped the Rebels earn a 1-0 lead over Hawai'i.

The visitors rallied in singles, however, and eventually tied the overall match at 3 with only Yang still playing on Court One. She won the first set over Cindy Nguyen in a tiebreaker, 7-6, and was leading late in the second set before severe leg cramps set in. Doubling over in pain, falling to the ground after big shots, taking a medical timeout and even suffering point penalties from the chair umpire for not being ready in time to receive a serve, Yang lost the second set 7-5 and quickly fell behind 2-0 in the third. Despite cramping so badly that she was forced to serve underhanded, Yang gutted out a 6-4 deciding set to win the match and improve her team to an incredible 18-0 this season.

Yang, currently ranked No. 69 in the nation, is 19-2 in singles and 14-3 in doubles. She is the fourth UNLV women's player in history to earn at least three conference weekly honors in the same season and the first since Lucia Batta won four times in 2012.

The Rebels will next be in action Friday when they host San Jose State with doubles play starting at 10:30 a.m. Admission is free of charge.
