LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV track & field program will head West to California and have members participating at the Beach Invitational and Mt. SAC Relays this weekend. The Rebels will see action on both Friday, April 15 and Saturday, April 16.
The majority of Rebels will head to Norwalk for the Mt. SAC Relays at Cerritos College Falcon Stadium. The 4x100m relay portion will be showcased by Asia Cooper, Destiny Smith-Barnett, Ayana Gales and Drea Austin. Joniece Ervin, Mandy Chitwood, Auzsane Crowe-Carter and Laura Anuakpado will represent the 4x400m relay section.
Members of the relays will also compete in other races on the track as well. Austin will run in the 200m and share duties with Smith-Barnett in the 100m. Chitwood and Crowe-Carter will share duties in the 800m, Ervin will compete in the 100m hurdles as well as the 400m hurdles and Anuakpado will compete in the 400m.
The field portion will be represented by Gales in the long jump, Kaysee Pilgrim in the high jump, and Cortney Miller on Friday in the hammer throw.
Also competing at the Relays are: Spencer Moore (1500m and 5000m), Sara Williams on Friday and Nikki Regalado (10,000m), Menzies (800m), Norris and Pegram (100m hurdles) and Micayla Coquia (100m).
A small contingent of Rebels will travel to Jack Rose Track Stadium on the campus of Long Beach State for the Beach Invitational. A total of ten wearing the Scarlet & Gray will compete in Long Beach.
Three Rebels - Myshauna Alexander, Vanessa Sierra and Kyra Day - will participate in the hammer throw. Alexander will also compete in the javelin throw and Sierra will compete in the shot put. The track portion will see Jordan Smith (100m), Shaye'e Swaine (400m), Iris Munguia (800m) and Rebecca Hobby (1500m). Three more Rebels that will see time at both meets are Taylor Pegram and Amari Norris (100m hurdles) and Miranda Menzies (400m).
UNLV entered the week with three of its own atop the Mountain West's 2016 Performance List with Anuakpado in the 400m, Crowe-Carter in the 800m and Pilgrim in the high jump. The program also has some in second: Smith-Barnett (100m), Miller (hammer), 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay. Nationally speaking, Pilgrim ranks 11th in the country, while Miller is 22nd.
