Rebels Face Lobos On The Road

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV softball heads out on the road for the third Mountain West series away from home this season against New Mexico. The Rebels and Lobos square off Friday at 4:00 p.m. PT to kick off the weekend series. The two teams will then play on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. PT and 11:00 a.m. PT on Sunday in the series finale.

UNLV has won seven of the past eight series against New Mexico.

SCOUTING UNLV

The Rebels, under fourth-year head coach Lisa Dodd, stand 20-24 overall and 4-11 in Mountain West play. After 44 games, senior 2B Alyssa Cordova is the Rebels' leading hitter with a .361 batting average and .438 on-base percentage. She also leads the team with 14 walks and nine doubles in addition to 19 RBI and 24 runs. Sophomore UTL/RHP Janine Petmecky (.339 batting average), one of seven Rebels with a batting average over .300, has a team-high 45 hits and .530 slugging percentage and also shares the team lead in RBI (24) and home runs (5). Sophomore CF/IF Jadelyn Yadao-Valdez (.340) has produced 21 runs on 34 hits and 15 RBI. The speedster Yadao-Valdez leads the team in stolen bases, swiping 10 bases in 12 attempts. Senior OF Francesca Foti (.323) has the second best slugging percentage on the team (.525). Foti has a team-high three triples and also eight doubles, two home runs and 20 RBI. Senior 3B/1B Jamie DePippo shares the team-lead in RBI and home runs with Petmecky. DePippo (.309) leads the team with 28 runs on 42 hits, three doubles and seven stolen bases. Even with just 76 at-bats, senior C Emily Haslinger (.289) has 19 RBI, four doubles, two triples, three home runs and a.513 slugging percentage.

In the circle junior 1B/RHP Kwyn Cooper (3.28 ERA) sports a 7-9 record in 91.2 innings pitched and 17 starts, the most of any Rebels. Cooper's struck out 25 batters, walked 29 and hit only two batters. Freshman 1B/RHP Alyssa Batastini (4.33) has made 11 starts and 29 appearances, the most of the pitching staff. Batastini has fanned 32 batters and walked 29. Petmecky (4.58) has started nine games and made 24 appearances. With a 3-7 record, she has 26 strikeouts and 26 walks in 65.2 innings pitched. Junior RHP Morgan Ettinger (4.76) has a 5-2 record in seven games started and 20 appearances. She has recorded 25 strikeouts, 15 walks and three complete games.

SCOUTING NEW MEXICO

The New Mexico Lobos, under the guidance of sixth-year head coach Erica Beach, stand 20-17 overall and 5-6 in Mountain West play. Senior OF Mariah Rimmer boasts a team-high .408 batting average, 32 runs, 51 hits, 13 doubles, six stolen bases and a .452 on-base percentage and also shares the team-lead in triples (two) and home runs (five). Sophomore C Chelsea Johnson (.386 batting average) has the top slugging percentage (.702) and also shares the team-lead with home runs despite playing in only 23 games. Junior INF Jasmine Casados (.360) has 40 hits, nine doubles, three home runs, 17 walks and a .450 on-base percentage. Junior INF Michala Erickson (.303), one of three Lobos to start all 37 games (Rimmer and Casados), has 20 runs on 36 hits and eight doubles and is the third player to share the team lead with five home runs.

In the circle five different pitchers have started for the Lobos on the year. Freshman LHP Colette Robert has started the most games (13) and thrown the most innings (98.1) on the staff. With an 8-7 record and a 4.13 ERA, Robert has struck out 45 batters and walked 14. Senior RHP Lauren Soles (4.43 ERA), sports a 4-6 record and has fanned 30 batters while walking 24. Sophomore RHP Krissy Fortner (4.82) has a 3-3 record, four saves, 16 strikeouts and seven walks. RS-Jr. LHP Tess McPherson (6.45 ERA) has a 3-1 record, seven starts, nine strikeouts and 23 walks.

WHERE THE REBELS RANK IN THE MW

• UNLV ranks first or share the lead in the Mountain West in five offensive categories: total plate appearances (1,321), at-bats (1,153), sac bunts (44), stolen bases (49) and steal attempts (61). The Rebels also rank first in two pitching categories: innings pitched (285) and intentional walks allowed (1).
• Janine Petmecky is tied for sixth in plate appearances (137) and in at-bats (132), eighth in appearances (14), tied for sixth in least doubles allowed (11 and sixth in putouts (195).
• Alyssa Cordova ranks tied for second in assists (107).
• Jamie DePippo is fourth in plate appearances (154) and at-bats (136), tied for ninth in steal attempts (9) and tied for ninth in assists (87).
• Kwyn Cooper is first in least hit by pitches for pitching (two) and 9th nationally, fifth in ERA (3.28), 10th in opposing batting average (.286), sixth in appearances (25), seventh in innings pitched (91.2), ninth in wins (seven), fourth in games started (17) and tied for sixth in least doubles allowed (11).
• Alyssa Batastini ranks tied for second in appearances (29) and first in games in relief (18).
• Jadelyn Yadao-Valdez ranks tied for sixth in stolen bases (10) and tied for fourth in steal attempts (12) while junior OF Courtney Beavers is tied for eighth in steals (eight) and tied for ninth in steal attempts (nine).
• Sophomore C Brooke Stover has been the primary catcher for the Rebels, starting in all but five games. Stover is first in runners picked off (four) in the conference and tied for fourth in caught stealing by (six).
• Despite missing the first eight games, Garie Blando is sixth in assists (96).
• Francesca Foti is tied for fifth in triples (3).
• The Rebels have used sac bunts all season long to advance baserunners, placing first in the conference. Four different Rebels place in the top ten for sac bunts so far this season: DePippo has 10 to rank third, Cooper and freshman OF Myranda Bueno ranks tied for fifth (7), and Foti is eighth with six.
• UNLV has been one of the best at turning double plays in the nation, ranking 31st in the NCAA (.43 per game). In the MW, Cordova (11) is tied for fourth in fielding double plays.

THE REBELS GO WHERE THE OFFENSE GOES

The offense has primarily dictated the end result for UNLV. The Rebels are 14-2 when scoring at least six runs but are winless in 13 games when scoring less three runs. When UNLV out-hits opponents they are 13-2 but 3-20 when they are out-hit. UNLV has maintained a lead after four innings in 17 of 21 games, but have only come back for wins trailing after four innings in three of 23 games.

OTHER UNLV NOTES AND TRENDS

• Three Rebels- Alyssa Cordova, Jadelyn Yadao-Valdez and Janine Petmecky- have started all but one game this season.
• Senior C Emily Haslinger has been one of the better power hitters in UNLV history during her four years donning the Scarlet and Grey. She ranks ninth in program history in home runs with 30 and fifth in slugging percentage with .593.
• UNLV defeated Santa Clara 20-1 on March 11 in the Rebel Classic and tied two school records in the blowout win. The Rebels tied the record for runs scored in a game with 20. The previous time the Rebels scored 20 runs was on May, 2 1981 against Redlands. Bueno tied the school record for most doubles in a game with three, joining Jaci Hull (Mar. 24, 2007 versus Sacramento State) as the only Rebels to do so.
• UNLV faced five non-conference opponents for the first time in program history: Lamar, South Dakota, Robert Morris, Valparaiso, and Grand Canyon.
• The Rebels opened MW play at home against San Diego State, capturing the last two wins of the series.
• All six Division I schools in Utah have played multiple games in Las Vegas. Utah State swept this past weekend and also played five games in the DeMarini Desert Classic (Feb. 19-21) and five more in the Rebel Classic (Feb. 11-13). Utah Valley played five games in the Sportco Kick Off Clasic (Feb. 12-14) and lost to UNLV 11-1 in five innings on Feb. 14. Weber State, BYU and Utah all played in the DeMarini Desert Classic. Southern Utah played UNLV twice in the DeMarini Desert Classic and UNLV Classic (March 3-6).

ON DECK

UNLV returns home for a nonconference weekend series against Oklahoma State. The Rebels and Cowgirls will play a doubleheader next Saturday starting at 3:00 p.m. and end the series on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
