Women's Tennis Outlasts Wyoming In MW Tourney Opener

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com) - The No. 72 ranked and third-seeded UNLV women's team won its opening match at the Mountain West Conference Championship against sixth-seeded Wyoming Friday at Miramont Lifestyle Fitness Center in Fort Collins, Colorado. This marks the first semifinal appearance for the Rebels since winning the league championship in 2013.

While UNLV improved to 22-1 in post season play, the Cowgirls ended their campaign at 11-12.

Wyoming gained a quick 1-0 lead to start the match by winning the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and 3 positions. The Rebels lone victory came at the top of the lineup where Carol Yang and Aiwen Zhu doubled up on Magdalena Stencel and Nastya Tokareva 6-3.

Moving to singles, all-conference member and freshman of the year Zhu got UNLV on the board by defeating Dorottya Jones 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 to tie the match 1-1. The Rebels took the lead 2-1 when fellow all-conference teammate Anna Bogoslavets outlasted Tokareva 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 3. Wyoming would tie the match 2-2 on court one where Stencel pushed 96th ranked and third all-conference member for the Rebels, Yang, to a third set, upending her 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3). Paola Artiga regained the lead for the Rebels by going the distance with Elisa Koonik, downing her 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 at No. 4. The final point scored for the Cowgirls, resulting in another tie at 3-3, was on court five where Sanne Hoekstra grabbed a 6-2, 7-5 win over Cristina Moroi. Senior Iren Kotseva clinched the match winning point for the Rebels on court six where she downed Tessa van Der Ploeg 7-5, 6-3.

UNLV is set to play on Saturday in the semifinals against second-seeded New Mexico (15-6) beginning at 4 p.m. PT. Live scoring updates of UNLV matches will be available at www.unlvrebels.com.
