LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The fourth-seeded UNLV men's tennis team upended second-seeded and 59th-ranked Boise State 4-3 to capture the program's second Mountain West Conference tournament championship on Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. The win marks an end to Boise State's four-year run of Mountain West titles and shatters the Broncos' perfect 13-0 all-time record in Championship play.
Now, thirteen-year head coach Owen Hambrook and his Rebels are headed to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2007 after securing the league's automatic bid. It marked the fifth conference tournament championship in program history but the second since UNLV won three straight as part of the Big West Conference in 1994-96.
With their fifth straight victory this spring, the fourth-seeded Rebels improved to 15-9 overall while the second-seeded Broncos saw their own six-match winning streak snapped to end their season at 20-10.
The Rebels earned the crucial doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 1 positions. Boise State won the first doubles contest of the match at No. 3 when Brian Foley and Pedro Platzeck defeated Alexandr Cozbinov and Richard Solberg, 6-2. UNLV responded with a win on court 2 where Adam Gage-Brown and Evaldo Neto doubled up on Lewis Roskilly and ThomasTenreiro,6-3. Jakob Amilon and Ruben Alberts sealed the doubles tally for the Rebels with a 6-4 victory at the top of the lineup against the Broncos' Kyle Butters and Toby Mitchell.
Moving to singles, UNLV gained a quick 2-0 advantage when Amilon downed Foley in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, on court one. Boise State started to rally, picking up a victory at the No. 3 position where Mitchell ousted Alberts, 7-6, 6-3. The team score was evened a two apiece after the Broncos' Butters knocked off Neto, 6-3, 7-5. Gage-Brown regained the lead for the Rebels by defeating Platzeck in straight-sets, 7-6, 6-2, pulling UNLV within one point of clinching the title. Tenreiro put the Rebels' celebration plans on hold by rallying to knock off Cozbinov at No. 2, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. With the match tied at 3-3, both team's title hopes rested on the No. 6 match between Solberg and Roskilly. The UNLV freshman dropped the first set, 4-6, but rallied to win the second and third frames, 6-0, 6-3, to clinch the championship for the Rebels.
"On our Facebook page, Mehdi Bouras' dad wrote a nice message to the team saying 'Don't just be happy to be in the final -- go out and win it.' And that's what I told the guys -- and that's what we did," said Hambrook. "And this one is for Mehdi (2011 Mountain West Player of the Year who tragically passed away at the age of 24 in 2013). It's been a while since our last one and it feels awesome. This is for all of the Rebels, not just this year's group, but all of them over the years. This is such a great group of guys -- one through nine -- and they got it done today."
UNLV will learn its destination for the NCAA Regionals when the field is announced on Tuesday.
