FORT COLLINS, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com) - The No. 72 ranked and third-seeded UNLV women's team won its semifinal match in the Mountain West Conference Championship against second-seeded and 56th ranked New Mexico, 4-3, Saturday at the Fort Collins Country Club in Fort Collins, Colorado. With the win, the Rebels advance to the championship match for the first time since 2013, where they were victorious after beating the No. 1 seed San Diego State 4-1.
While UNLV improved to 23-1 in post season play, the Lobos ended their campaign at 15-7.
UNLV forged a 1-0 lead to start the match by winning the doubles point. The All-MW Conference tandem Carol Yang and Aiwen Zhu downed Emily Olivier and Dominique Dulski 6-4 at the top of the lineup; while Iren Kotseva and Paola Artiga clinched the point with a 7-5 win over Sharon Coone and Ludivine Burguiere on court three.
Moving to singles, all-conference member and freshman of the year Zhu extended the lead for the Rebels with a two-set victory at the No. 2 singles position, beating Olivier 6-3, 6-2. New Mexico came storming back, tying the match after earning wins on court 1 with Andrea Leblanc's 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 victory over 96th ranked Yang and court 4 where Dulski went the distance with Artiga, beating her 6-2, 7-6 (9-7). The No. 3 singles match between Rebel Anna Bogoslavets and Lobo Ludivine Burguiere lasted a grand four hours and 15-minutes, resulting in a 6-7, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-3) win for Bogoslavets. This marked Bogoslavets' 23rd consecutive singles victory. The Lobos would tie the match once again with a victory at position 5 where Coone defeated Cristina Moroi 6-2, 6-3. However, the Rebels would grab the victory at the bottom of the lineup where senior Rebel, Kotseva, topped Rachana Bhat 6-0, 6-3.
Sunday's matchup marks the Rebels seventh Mountain West championship appearance. UNLV is currently (3-3) in the MW championships. They are set to play No. 1 seed Fresno State at the Fort Collins Country Club at 11 a.m. MT. Sunday's championship match can be streamed for free on the Mountain West Network.
