CLOVIS, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV track & field's Stella Clemens moved up two spots Thursday to finish ninth overall in the heptathlon at the 2016 Mountain West Outdoor Championships. Clemens entered the day in 11th place and advanced in the standings with a second-place showing in the javelin and then produced personal-bests in the long jump and 800m en route to a personal-best haul of 4,846 points at Buchanan High School's Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Clemens began the day tied for seventh-place in the long jump as she notched a leap of 18-0.25/5.49m before she unleashed a throw of 120-0 (36.58m) in the javelin. She concluded the seven-event discipline with a time of 2:33.88 in the 800.
"We wanted to go into day three with a few more points but we still have most of our heat waiting to compete," said head coach Yvonne Wade. "This will be a battle until the very end and I trust that these women will step up and get the job done!"
In the 10,000m, Sara Williams ran a time of 38:03.13 good enough for eighth place and garnered one point for the Scarlet & Gray.
"Sara ran tough tonight to get a point for her team," said assistant coach Jebreh Harris. "She always runs tough, but she went into tonight's race not at 100 percent and gave all that she had for her teammates. We are truly proud of her and her performance. Twenty-five laps isn't easy to do for anyone. I'm proud of both Sara and Nikki for how they put it on the line for UNLV."
By virtue of Williams' finish, the Scarlet & Gray earned one points and sits eighth overall in the Conference standings.
Colorado State sits in first place with a total of 29 points with help from 16 of those from a trio of participants in the heptathlon, including 10 from event champion Jessica Green. The Rams got 13 more from a duo in the 10,000.
New Mexico is second with 16 points while Air Force and San Diego State are tied for third with nine apiece. Nevada, Reno (eight points), Wyoming (four), Utah State (two) and UNLV (one) round out eight teams that have registered points through two days.
Friday's action gets underway at 3:30 pm with the hammer throw, while the track portion begins at 4:30 pm with the men's 1500m. The women's 1500m will start 15 minutes later. Field events will conclude at 6:00 pm with the women's shot put while the steeplechase closes out Friday's slate at 8:00 pm.
