CLOVIS, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - After three days of competition, the UNLV track & field team sits in sixth place at the 2016 Mountain West Outdoor Championships. Two Rebels combined to earn 14 points Friday to boost the Scarlet & Gray's total to 15 at the Conference meet hosted by the Fresno State at Buchanan High School's Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Ayana Gales finished second overall (20-10.75/6.37m) in the long jump for eight points, while Cortney Miller garnered six points with a third-place finish (189-06/57.77m) in the hammer throw.
"I am very proud of the team's efforts today," said head coach Yvonne Wade. "They fought hard to get those spots in the finals. Once you're in the final, it's anybody's game!"
The Rebels look to make a move in the standings Saturday after nine of their own qualified for the finals in five races. Auzsane Crowe-Carter and Mandy Chitwood advanced out of the preliminary rounds to qualify for the 800m final. The former won her heat (2:08.17), while the latter registered a second-place time of 2:10.54. Miranda Menzies (seventh: 2:12.07) and Spencer Moore (eighth: 2:12.40) also qualified for the 800m finals.
In the 100m, Destiny Smith-Barnett (second: 11.32-w), Drea Austin (fourth: 11.34-w) and Asia Cooper (eighth: 11.62-w) qualified for the 100m finale, while Gales ran a personal-best time of 11.67. Drea Austin secured the fastest qualifying mark in the 200m with a time of 23.01.
In the hurdles, Joniece Ervin ran a time of 13.85 in the 100m discipline and 1:00.34 in the 400m discipline good enough for a personal-best mark and qualify for the finals, while Amari Norris legged out a 14.12 in the 100m version.
Two Rebels notched personal bests in the 400m and hammer throw Friday. Vanessa Sierra threw 164-11/50.28m in the hammer throw finale, while Micayla Coquia crossed the line in 57.62 in the 400m. Saturday starts with the women's discus at 3:30 pm. The 4x400m relay closes the women's portion of the meet at 8:55 pm. In all, the day will see 12 individuals and two relay teams crowned champions in a total of 14 events - 10 track and four field.
Colorado State paces the 11-team field with 89 points. San Diego State is second (42 points) and is followed by New Mexico and Utah State (30), Boise State (16), UNLV (15), Wyoming (14), Nevada, Reno (11), Fresno State (10), Air Force (nine) and San Jose State (seven).
NOTES: Gales' finish in the long jump was the best by a Rebel at the MW Outdoor Championships since Amber Sanford took fifth (19-7/5.97m) at the 2014 event ... Miller's third-place finish Friday is her best at the MW Outdoors after previously coming in fourth in both 2013 and `14.
