LAWRENCE, Kan. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV track & field team's stay at the NCAA Outdoor West Preliminary Championships has come to an end with its participation in the 4x100m relay, 100m hurdles and 200m Saturday. With the conclusion of the regional meet, the Rebels will send two of their own, Kaysee Pilgrim (high jump) and Ayana Gales (long jump), to Eugene, Ore., for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in two weeks (June 8-11).
The three-day meet, which was hampered by numerous delays and schedule changes due to inclement weather, was originally scheduled to only take place at the University of Kansas' Rock Chalk Park, but some events had to be moved indoors to Anschutz Pavilion.
"This championship has been bittersweet," said head coach Yvonne Wade. "I am extremely proud of all of our student-athletes, especially those who have punched their tickets to Eugene. Kaysee and Ayana are great student-athletes and now they can showcase that at the finals!"
The Scarlet & Gray's foursome of Micayla Coquia, Destiny Smith-Barnett, Gales and Drea Austin finished 15th overall in the 4x100m relay with a time of 45.13. Unfortunately, their finish was three spots and 0.35 seconds out of the top 12 and a qualifying spot for a trip to Oregon.
Austin also ran in the 200m and took 24th (23.59), while teammate Taylor Pegram was 38th (13.82) in the 100m hurdles.
"Our team is getting stronger and we know we have the talent to compete at a high level. We just need more opportunities to line up against strong teams, so that we gain confidence in pressure situations."
Overall, the Rebels had 10 of their own qualify for this week's NCAA meet in the Sunflower State. UNLV was represented by Myshauna Alexander (javelin), Cortney Miller (hammer throw), Asia Cooper (100m), Auzsane Crowe-Carter (800m), Austin (100m, 200m and relay), Coquia (relay), Smith-Barnett (100m and relay), Gales (long jump and relay), Pegram (100m hurdles) and Pilgrim (high jump).
