July 15, 2016 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Larry Wade, a two-time NCAA champion in the 110m hurdles and five-time All-American, signed a letter of offer to serve as an assistant coach with the UNLV track & field program, head coach Yvonne Wade announced Friday.
"We are excited about having Larry Wade with us in a full-time capacity," said Yvonne Wade. "He has been an integral part of this program's growth, and he knows what it takes to push our student-athletes to the next level."
Larry Wade has served as a volunteer assistant coach with the Rebels for the past three years. He has primarily focused on the development of the program's sprinters and hurdlers. He has mentored Drea Austin in both the 100m and 200m, and, in turn, she has been the team's high-point scorer at Mountain West Championships in 2015 and 2016. Additionally, he coached standout sprinter Destiny Smith-Barnett to a 60m title at the Mountain West Indoor Championships. Smith-Barnett and teammate Taylor Pegram also ran their way into the program's top five in the 60m and 60m hurdles, respectively, at that Conference meet, as well. This past season, Wade coached three sprinters to the 100m final at the MW Outdoor Championships, which is the first time the feat had occurred in over a decade.
Prior to UNLV, Wade was tabbed the 2013 California Junior College Head Coach of the Year after he guided the men's and women's programs to top-25 rankings. He coached Omunique Browne to the California Junior College State titles in both the 100m and 200m and later to a bronze medal in the 200m at the Pan American Junior Championships.
He began his coaching career in 2004, and mentored Dominique Arnold who broke the American record in the 110m hurdles. Two years later, he became the head coach of The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and led the team to a haul of eight gold medals at the 2006 Asian Games.
In 2007, Wade coached Carmelita Jeter to a World Championship gold and bronze medal in the 4x100m relay and 100m, respectively. He also guided Al-Sabee (long jump/KSA) and Nelly Tchayem (triple jump/France) to a pair of national titles. He also went on to coach Rodney Martin (4x100m relay/USA), Shevon Stoddart (400m hurdles/Jamaica) and Fabien Fareez (200m/France) to spots on their 2008 Olympic teams.
Wade graduated from Texas A&M University in 1998, where he had an undefeated season and won two national championships and earned All-American status. He closed out his collegiate career with four Big 12 and one Southwest Conference titles. He was selected to his alma mater's hall of fame in 2008.
After college, Wade was ranked as one of the top-five athletes in the world in the 110m hurdles from 1999-2004. In 2003, he won the gold medal at the Pan Am Games, bronze medal at the Goodwill Games and was a finalist at the World Championships.
