EUGENE, Ore. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV track & field program was represented by rising senior Kaysee Pilgrim and alumna Lekeisha Lawson on the third day of the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon. Both came up short in their bids in the high jump and 100m to represent the Red, White & Blue at the Rio Olympics with Pilgrim's 11th-place finish in the high jump final while Lawson was 17th in the 100m semifinal Sunday.
"It's always a great opportunity for our athletes to compete against the nation's best athletes, and there is no stage bigger than this," said head coach Yvonne Wade. "We are all very proud of Kaysee and we are really excited to have her back for another season. This Olympic Trials will help bring her experience to the rest of the team."
Pilgrim successfully cleared a height of 5-10.5 (1.79m) to start the final round of the high jump, but was unable to surpass 6-0.5 (1.84m). The 5-10.5 (1.79m) height was the highest that she has ever started a round.
"I was blessed to have this experience while being able to learn what it takes to be great," noted Pilgrim. "I will train even harder to reach my full potential."
Lawson, who ran for the Rebels from 2006-09, took fifth in the third heat with a time of 11.18. She also qualified to run in the 200m, which begins Friday (July 8: First Round).
The Scarlet & Gray's Amanda Bingson is looking to make her second straight Olympic team in the hammer throw. The Silverado High School graduate represented the U.S. at the 2012 London Olympics after a second-place finish at the Trials and will take to the throwing ring Wednesday.
Bingson won back-to-back U.S. championships in 2013 and 2014, and established stadium records in both competitions. Additionally, she rewrote the American record twice over at the 2013 national meet, which included a record-setting toss of 248-5 (74.92m) -- the mark was surpassed earlier this year by Gwen Berry (250-4/76.31m). At last year's meet, Bingson took third and, in turn, competed in Beijing at the 15th IAAF World Championships.
