AUSTIN, TEXAS (UNLVRebels.com) - After nearly a month without competing, the UNLV women's golf team was back in action Monday at the annual Betsy Rawls Invitational in Austin, Texas. The Rebels shot a two-round score of 14-over 590 to sit in a tie for fifth heading into Tuesday's final round at the University of Texas Golf Club.
It wasn't how the Rebels started, but how they finished, as UNLV jumped from tied for 12th after the first 18 holes to the top five by day's end thanks to a 16-stroke improvement between the first and second rounds. Freshman
Polly Mack was UNLV's top finisher on the day shooting identical scores of 73 in each round, good for a tie for 21st at 2-over. Overall, the Scarlet and Gray have four players in the top-36 with one round to play.
Tournament host and 19th-ranked Texas has a commanding lead atop the leaderboard after Monday's play after shooting an 8-under 568 for a 13-stroke lead. Individually, No. 25 Clemson's Alice Hewson led the way with a 7-under 137, clinging to a one-stroke lead heading into Tuesday.
STAT OF THE DAY: As a team, the Rebels carded a 15-over 303 in round one followed by a 1-under 287 in round two - a 16-stroke improvement.
REBEL OF THE DAY: Mack, playing in just her second collegiate tournament, was the most consistent Rebel on day one with her two rounds of 73.
