LIHUE, Hawaii (UNLVRebels.com) - The No. 21 UNLV men's golf team shot a final-round-low 14-under-par 274 on Friday and finished in third place at the 41st Annual John A. Burns Intercollegiate, which was played at Kauai's Wailua Golf Course (par 72, 6,991 yards).
No. 9 Virginia led the tournament wire-to-wire and captured the team title by four shots at 29-under 835. No. 25 Texas A&M was second at 25-under, while the Rebels finished five back of the Cavaliers at 24-under 840. BYU finished fourth at 8-under, and California and Santa Clara rounded out the top five in a tie for fifth at 4-under.
There were 18 teams competing.
Individually, Texas A&M's Chandler Phillips earned medalist honors by three shots at 15-under 201 after a final-round 4-under 68. Santa Clara's Hayden Shieh placed second at 12-under, while there was a three-way tie for third that included UNLV sophomore Harry Hall.
Hall shot a final-round-low 7-under 65 to finish the tournament at 10-under 206. Hall's final round consisted of eight birdies and a bogey.
UNLV junior Shintaro Ban was also in the top 10 as he finished seventh at 8-under 208 after a final-round 4-under 68. He had five birdies and a bogey.
Two other Rebels finished in the top 15 as junior John Oda and freshman Justin Kim both tied for 13th at 3-under 213. Oda was 5-under 67 during a bogey-free final round (five birdies), while Kim was 2-over on the day.
UNLV senior Taylor Montgomery finished tied for 85th at 12-over after a final-round 77.
There were a total of 109 golfers competing.
This was UNLV's first tournament of the spring season. The Rebels have now played in five tournaments during 2016-17 and have recorded a first, second and third-place finish.
UNLV will be back in action on Feb. 27 at the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Ariz.
