ST. GEORGE, Utah (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV Softball finished the weekend at the Red Desert Classic in St. George, Utah, with a 7-2 loss against Binghamton in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Rebels went 3-2 at the tournament and moved to 12-7 on the season.
The Rebel offense struggled to get things going on Sunday morning, scoring two runs on seven hits against Bearcat pitcher Rozlyn Price, who turned in a complete game performance. Right-hander
Morgan Ettinger, who has been stellar so far in her senior campaign, couldn't find her rhythm, giving up seven runs - five of them earned - on 11 hits with three strikeouts.
The first inning, which has been the Rebels' bread and butter throughout most of the first month of the season, proved to be the Rebels undoing as a leadoff triple coupled with two more hits and three errors by the Scarlet & Gray defense gave the Bearcats a 3-0 lead. Binghamton added two more in the third on a two-out RBI double and another two in the fifth on a two-run home run.
The first of the two runs for the Rebels came in the top of fourth after
Brianna Gatlin led off the inning with her team-leading fifth double of the season, followed by a single by
Janine Petmecky to put runners on the corners with no outs.
Alyssa Navarro brought Gatlin home with a sac fly, but that's all they could get off Price in the inning. UNLV added the second run in the top of the seventh on a bases-loaded walk, but Price was able to get out of the jam and get the win against the Rebels.
Petmecky was the top performer at the plate for the Scarlet & Gray over the weekend, going 7-for-15 (.467) with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored.
After two straight weekends on the road, the Rebels will return home for the next six games, starting with a Tuesday afternoon matchup against Creighton at 4 p.m. at Eller Media Stadium before hosting the final tournament of their non-conference slate, the Rebel Classic, March 10-12.
