Clemens Wins Shot Put, Sits 16th In Heptathlon

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Stella Clemens finished day one of the California Invitational Wednesday held at Azusa Pacific's Cougar Athletic Stadium. Clemens sits 16th in the heptathlon after competing in the 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200m.

Clemens' best effort came in the shot put with a first-place showing that earned 688 points (40-8.75/12.41m). In the three other events, she was tied for 18th in the high jump (5-1.75/1.57m), 20th in the 200m (25.82, PB) and 34th in the 100m hurdles (15.79).

Thursday's showing will see Clemens finish the heptathlon with the long jump, javelin and 800m.

The majority of the Rebels will also compete in the Bryan Clay Invitational, which is also being held at Cougar Athletic Stadium. The 4x100m relay team, ranked 11th in the country, will be showcased by Ayana Gales, Destiny Smith-Barnett, Najia Hudspeth and Drea Austin. Mandy Chitwood, Micayla Coquia, Nylia Hudspeth and Madison Aldred will represent the 4x400m relay section.

Members of the relays will also compete in other races on the track, as well. Austin will run in both the 100m and 200m while Smith-Barnett and Najia Hudspeth will take part in the 100m and 200m, respectively. Aldred, Coquia, Chitwood and Nylia Hudspeth will all run in the 400m.

The field portion will be represented by Gales and Tenia Landrum in the long jump, Danielle Williams in the triple jump, Taylor Forte and Vanessa Sierra in the discus throw as well as Sierra in the shot put.

Also competing at the Azusa Invite are Amari Norris, Forte and Jaela Williams (100m hurdles); Yamilet Biggers, Hannah Davis and Sydney Land (400m); Caitlin Amburgey and Spencer Moore (800m); Davis and Joniece Ervin (400m hurdles); Kenia Bonilla and Land (200m); and Nikki Regalado (5000m); Menzies (800m); Norris and Pegram (100m hurdles) and Micayla Coquia (100m).

Three Rebels - Regalado (10K, Thursday), Gales (long jump, Saturday) and Smith-Barnett (100m, Saturday) will travel to nearby Cerritos for the Mt. SAC Relays, which will be held at El Camino College.

UNLV entered the week with four of its own atop the Mountain West's 2017 Performance List with Smith-Barnett in the 200m, Gales in the long jump, and the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams. The program also has six in second: Smith-Barnett (100m), Najia Hudspeth (200m), Chitwood (800m), Pegram (100m hurdles), Davis (400m hurdles) and Clemens (heptathlon). Nationally speaking, Smith-Barnett ranks sixth in the country in the 100m while Gales is 11th in the long jump.
