LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV sophomore Aiwen Zhu has been named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) 2017 Mountain Region Player to Watch.
It marked the third time in history but the second straight year that a Rebel won the award as Zhu's teammate, Carol Zi Yang, took home the same honor in 2016. They join former All-American Elena Gantcheva who won it for the West Region in 2006.
A native of Wuxi, China, Zhu led the Rebels in winning percentage with a singles record of 22-6, including 5-0 at the No. 1 position in the lineup; and also posted a 17-11 mark in doubles. Zhu, who is 47-15 in singles for her career, was named All-Mountain West in both singles and doubles for the second consecutive season while helping UNLV to a share of the league's regular-season title. She earned the Player to Watch Award after being named the 2016 MW Freshman of the Year.
