Yang To Start NCAA Play

May 23, 2017

ATHENS, Ga. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV senior standout Carol Yang is scheduled to open play at the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Singles Championship on Wednesday.

Yang, ranked 57th in the nation, will face No. 30 Stacey Fung, a sophomore from the University of Washington, with a slated start time of 9 a.m. PT. It will mark the first meeting between the two players. The winner of that match will advance to take on the winner of No. 12 Ellen Perez (seeded 9-16) of host Georgia vs. No. 60 Kimmy Guerin of Wake Forest as part of the 64-player field on Thursday.

Rain has hampered the team action this week at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia, so the first round of singles may be moved indoors. All matches are the best-of-three sets. No-ad scoring and a seven-point tiebreaker (first to seven points, must win by two points) at six-games-all will be used.

"Carol is looking forward to getting started tomorrow," said UNLV head coach Kevin Cory, who traveled with Yang to the national event. "It's a great honor to be part of such an impressive field but Carol earned her place here and has shown she can beat anybody in the country."

Yang (Shenzhen, China) became the ninth Lady Rebel to earn a spot in the NCAA Singles Championship by securing the league's automatic bid as the highest ranked player in the Mountain West. Named All-MW for the second consecutive season, she stands 25-11 overall and has two wins over opponents ranked in the top 15 at the time of the match, including current No. 8 Viktoriya Lushkova of Oklahoma State.
