SACRAMENTO, California (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV track & field program's Destiny Smith-Barnett and alumna Lekeisha Lawson competed in the first round of the 100m Thursday at the 2017 USATF Outdoor Championships, which are being held at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium. Smith-Barnett, a rising senior from Oakland, California, finished 21st overall (11.24), while Lawson, a 2009 Rebel graduate, was three spots back in 24th (11.33).
By virtue of their finishes neither Smith-Barnett nor Lawson will advance to Friday's second round.
The Scarlet & Gray; however, will have two more alumnae participate at the national meet with Kaysee Pilgrim in the high jump Friday (5:40 pm) and Amanda Bingson in the hammer throw Sunday (11:15 am).
Pilgrim earned a trip to Sacramento after she posted a measurement of 6-1.25 (1.86m) en route to winning the high jump at the MW Outdoor Championships. Not only is that height a program- and personal-best, but it also tops the conference's all-time and meet marks. At last year's U.S. Olympic Trials, the Phoenix native finished 11th overall.
Bingson (2009-12) won three MW titles in the hammer throw from 2010-12, and then began a successful four-year run at the USATF Outdoor Championships/U.S. Olympic Trials. During this stretch, the Las Vegas native and Silverado High School graduate finished between first and third and subsequently represented the Red, White & Blue each summer in international competitions. In 2012, she took second to earn a spot on Team USA at the London Olympics. She claimed back-to-back national titles in 2013 and 2014 at the Championships held in Des Moines, Iowa, and Sacramento, respectively. The 2013 win was a result of a throw of 248-5 (74.92m) that still stands as an American and meet record. One year later, she connected on two straight throws that broke the Hornet Stadium record, the second of which measured 246-3 (75.07m). In 2015, she was third overall and represented the U.S. for the third straight year at the IAAF World Championships. Unfortunately, she was fourth at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials.
