LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – Host UNLV saw its contingent finish with a combined record of 8-1 in singles and doubles during the first day of the 2018 ITA Mountain Region Championships, which kicked off Wednesday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on campus.
 
Members from 22 western teams are facing off as individuals this week on 12 courts each day in both singles and doubles.
 
In singles, top Rebel Aiwen Zhu, seeded second and ranked 49^th in the nation, breezed by Sara Parker of Weber State 6-0, 6-1; En-Pei Huang, seeded 10^th, had to rally past Eirene Granville of NAU, 1-6, 6-4, 6-5; Anna Bogoslavets, seeded 16^th, swept Hristina Cvetkovi of Idaho State, 6-4, 6-2; Alex Kalachova downed Nathalie Joannlanne of Montana, 6-2, 6-3; Izumi Asano advanced over Linda Vink of Montana State, 6-1, retired; and Samantha Li held off Harsha Challa of New Mexico State, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6;
 
In doubles, the event's top-seeded team of Zhu and Huang, ranked 37^th nationally, enjoyed a bye while Asano and Li won 8-2 over a team from Montana and Kalachova and Bogoslavets emerged 8-3 over a duo from Weber State.
 
The ITA Regional Championships feature more than 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete across 85 ITA Regional Championships around the country. In Division I, regional doubles champions and regional singles champions and finalists qualify for the season-ending Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Surprise, Arizona.
 
Thursday's action gets under way with doubles at 9:00 a.m. PT and two rounds of singles will follow. The finals are set for Sunday. Admission to all matches is free of charge.
