LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -Â UNLV women's soccer twice battled back from trailing the Lobos to earn a 3-3 double overtime draw Friday night on "Kick Cancer Pink Night" at Peter Johann Memorial Field. UNLV fell behind 1-0 early and tied it at one, then faced a 3-1 deficit in the second half and again rallied to even the game at three with two second-half goals by junior midfielder
Georgia Kingman. Both teams had their chances in the 20 minutes of overtime, but neither could connect on the game-winner.
UNLV's third draw of the year moved its record to 8-5-3 overall and 2-3-2 in the Mountain West, while New Mexico is now 7-5-2 and 3-2-2, with each team earning one point in conference standings.
THE TURNING POINT:Â Trailing 3-1 under 10 minutes into the second half, the Rebels easily could have folded up shop and accepted the loss. Instead they stayed aggressive and that paid off, first in the 61st minute when senior
Amanda Galbraith found a streaking Kingman in the box, who took one swing and blasted it past the Lobo keeper to make it 3-2. Kingman wasn't done yet. With the Rebels running out of time with under 10 to play in regulation, sophomore
Robin Pollard sent a booming cross into the box and Kingman was again ready, scoring from almost the exact same spot to knot the game at three.
STAT OF THE GAME:Â The two teams combined for a total of 45 shots - the most in any game this year - with the Rebels out-shooting the Lobos 23-22.
REBEL OF THE GAME:Â Hard to argue with Kingman. Coming into the game the junior had just one goal all season and doubled that output in a span of 20 minutes in the second half. The goals were huge as the Rebels needed to earn at least one point in the game to stay in the race to make the Mountain West tournament.
QUOTABLE:Â "I felt like tonight's game was a tale of two halves. New Mexico was definitely the stronger team in the first half and I felt like we were the better team in the second half. Credit to the players for battling back from behind twice. It was an exciting end to end game and I'm proud of the team's gutsy performance."Â
