Rebels Shut Out Aztecs On Senior Day

NLV uses a pair of first-half goals by seniors Caitlyn Kreutz and Amanda Galbraith to beat SDSU 2-0

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV women's soccer put an exclamation point on Senior Day at Peter Johann Memorial Field Sunday as the Rebels shut out San Diego State 2-0 thanks to a pair of first-half goals by seniors Cailtyn Kreutz and Amanda Galbraith. It was the second straight year UNLV beat the Aztecs via shutout, marking the first time the Rebels have won two consecutive games in the series since 2007 and 2008.

The win was also huge for UNLV with the Scarlet and Gray chasing one of the six coveted spots in the Mountain West Tournament. The Rebels improved to 9-5-3 overall and 3-3-2 in the Mountain West, moving them into a tie with SDSU (5-9-2, 3-3-2) in the standings at 11 points.

UNLV honored four seniors on the day - Kreutz and Galbraith and Las Vegas natives Isabella Myers and fifth-year senior Kaila Brinkman.

THE TURNING POINT: On Friday against New Mexico, it took until the second half for UNLV to get rolling, but that was not the case on Sunday. Junior midfielder Katie Ballou found the streaking Kreutz, who used her speed to blow past the SDSU defender and burry the ball into the net in the fourth minute for her sixth goal of the season. A few minutes later Kruetz found Galbraith in front of the goal and Galbraith connected for the 2-0 lead 12 minutes into the game.

STAT OF THE GAME: The shots may have been even at 14 to 14, but that is a little misleading at the Rebels dominated possession for most of the game.

REBEL OF THE GAME: Kreutz registered her fifth game-winning goal of the year, which ranks second in the Mountain West only to reigning conference player of the year, Boise State's Raimee Sherle. Kreutz also recorded her first assist on Galbraith's score. True freshman keeper deserves honorable mention as she collected eight saves on the 14 SDSU shots and notched her fifth shutout of the season.

QUOTABLE: "Every game at this time of year is a must-win game, so with us being at home for the last time and it being senior day, we really wanted to make sure we sent the seniors out the right way. But most importantly, we got the win and put ourselves in a better position to try to make the tournament with three games left."
- Head coach Chris Shaw

UP NEXT: The Rebels will play their last three regular season games on the road, beginning Friday at Colorado State at 2 p.m. PT.

REBEL NOTES:
* UNLV had scored just four goals through six conference games heading into Friday and managed five in two games at home over the weekend
* UNLV shut out its opponent for the fifth time this season
* With three games to play, the Rebels very much control its own destiny - win they are in and lose and it could be out of their control
* Three of UNLV's five losses this year have come on the road, so the last three will be a test for UNLV
* The Rebels finished 6-2-1 at home in 2018 and are 22-4-3 since the beginning of 2016
* Rebels finished non-conference play 6-2-1, marking the third straight year under Shaw that the Rebels have finished with two losses or less during non-league play
* UNLV is celebrating its 20th season in program history
