FORT COLLINS, CO (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV women's soccer used a dominant second half to take down Colorado State 3-0 in Fort Collins Friday afternoon. After an evenly played first half, the Rebels came out firing, scoring all three of their goals after halftime. The shutout was also the second straight for UNLV and the sixth overall in 2018.
It was an important victory for the Scarlet and Gray as they try to maintain their hold on a spot in the Mountain West tournament. Headed into the weekend, the Rebels were in possession of the sixth and final spot, and as long as they continue to rack up points over the final two games they should secure a trip to the postseason. With the win, UNLV is now 10-5-3 overall and 4-3-2 in the Mountain West, while Colorado State falls to 5-8-4 overall and 2-5-2.
THE TURNING POINT:Â UNLV looked a little sluggish in the first half, but the second half was a different story. The Rebels came out aggressive and it paid off just eight minutes into the second frame as
Amanda Galbraith sent a perfect cross right in front of the CSU goal and
Michaela Morris was able to skip it over to
Georgia Kingman, who buried it into the net for what proved to be the game winner. Almost 15 minutes later, junior
Katie Ballou found a streaking
Caitlyn Kreutz, who made a move on the CSU defender and slotted it past the Ram keeper for her second goal in as many games. Junior transfer
McKenna Sullivan added the final score on a penalty kick in the 76th minute.
STAT OF THE GAME:Â Rebels scored two or more goals for the third straight game, totaling eight over that stretch after scoring just four over its first six Mountain West contests.
CO-REBELS OF THE GAME:Â Emberly Sevilla notched her second straight shutout, making a handful of key stops throughout the game to preserve the win and the donut against the Rams. Kingman has picked it up offensively over the last three games, with her game-winner against CSU marking three goals during that stretch after scoring one all season prior to that.
QUOTABLE:Â "I thought we got off to a slow start in the first half and CSU had us pinned in early in the game. However, I thought we settled down later in the half and then really came out sharp in the second half, so I'm really proud of how the team battled."
