Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Sunday Setback For Rebels

UNLV drops a 1-0 contest on the road to the Spartans.

SAN JOSE, California (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV men's soccer gave up a goal in each half while a missed penalty kick would come back to haunt the Rebels as they dropped a WAC road match at San Jose State by a 2-1 score Sunday afternoon at the Spartan Soccer Complex. The loss would put the Rebels under .500 for the first time this season at 6-7-1 (1-3-1 WAC), while the Spartans improved to 5-5-2, 3-1-1 in league play.

SJSU took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute, until senior forward Danny Moran tied the game on a long low shot from 35 yards out that hit the left post before banking in past the goalkeeper to knot the game in the 34th minute.

The Spartans again went ahead by one in the 50th minute for a 2-1 edge, and would hold on for the one-goal victory.

THE TURNING POINT: UNLV had a great chance to tie the game after Marco Gonzalez was taken down in the box in the 72nd minute, awarding the Rebels a penalty kick. Timo Mehlich would send his attempt to the right side where it was blocked by the SJSU goalkeeper, and UNLV was held to just four more shot attempts the rest of the way.

STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV was outshot 20-12 for the afternoon, including 10-4 on shots on goal.

QUOTABLE
"Giving up a goal at the wrong time, right after halftime, that's a bad time for us to give us goals and we didn't recover the way I hoped we would. We did battle and we had chances, San Jose State had more, and at the end of the day we played a strong team on their home field. We look forward to getting back home to play Incarnate Word on Saturday night and we hope to regroup."
- Head Coach Rich Ryerson
