LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV senior standout
Aiwen Zhu will play for both the singles and doubles championships Sunday after the second day of action at the annual Rebel Women's Tennis Invitational at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
Joining the Rebels in the impressive lineup this weekend are competitors from Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Purdue, Iowa, Arizona, Air Force, Liberty and North Texas. The tournament marks the final event of the fall season for the Rebels.
In the top flight of singles, 49
th-ranked Zhu breezed by Purdue's Seira Shimizu, 6-1, 6-2, to advance to the final vs. Iowa's Samantha Mannix. In doubles, Zhu and partner
En-Pei Huang, ranked 37
th nationally, won 6-1 over the North Texas duo of Ivana Babic and Alexandra Heczey and will now take on Jayci Goldsmith and Tatiana Makarova of Texas A&M in the final.
Doubles action starts at 10 a.m. with singles to follow. Admission to all matches is free of charge.
Other Rebels playing in the final of their respective flights will be senior
Anna Bogoslavets, who won 6-3, 6-2 over Camila Westbrooks of Arizona in Flight Two;
Izumi Asano, who advanced when Lara Soares of Liberty retired in the first set in Flight Three; and
En-Pei Huang who won 6-4, 6-4 over Adorabol Huckleby of Iowa in Flight Four. Asano and
Samantha Li also won together in Flight Three of doubles to move into the final.
