Zhu Ends Autumn With Singles Title

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV senior standout Aiwen Zhu ended her fall tournament schedule on a high note by winning the top singles flight Sunday at the annual Rebel Women's Tennis Invitational played at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
Joining the Rebels in the impressive lineup this weekend were competitors from Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Purdue, Iowa, Arizona, Air Force, Liberty and North Texas.
Zhu, ranked 49th in the nation, downed Iowa's Samantha Mannix 6-2, 6-2 in the final. In doubles, Zhu and partner En-Pei Huang, ranked 37th nationally, lost an early lead and fell 7-5 to Jayci Goldsmith and Tatiana Makarova of Texas A&M.
While a trio of Rebels lost singles finals in their respective flights, the duo of Samantha Li and Izumi Asano downed Liberty's Medina and Anderson 6-2 for first place in Flight 3.
"Our team came out this weekend and finished the fall semester on a positive note," said UNLV head coach Kevin Cory. "With a very strong field, we were in the finals of six of nine flights. Aiwen again showed why she is one of the top players in the country by not dropping a set in winning the top flight. Izumi and Samantha also did a great job in winning their flight in doubles."
UNLV will be off until hosting the annual Freeman Memorial Championships January 18-20.
