LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -Â UNLV couldn't overcome a sluggish first half, and would drop a Senior Night contest to Grand Canyon 2-1 in the WAC men's soccer regular season finale for both teams Friday night from Peter Johann Memorial Field. The win moves GCU into the top four of the league standings at 6-4 (9-8 overall), while the Rebels dropped to 5-5-1 (10-9-1) overall. San Jose State also lost Friday night and are in a tie for sixth with UNLV at 5-5-1, but the Spartans hold the tiebreaker over UNLV, sending the Rebels to the seventh seed in next week's WAC Tournament.
The Rebels took just five shots in the first half, and only earned one scoring chance that was saved by the GCU goalkeeper. The Antelopes took advantage of the slow start by posting a pair of goals seven minutes apart midway through the first half (25th, 32nd minute). UNLV woke up in the second half, and quickly cut the edge to one in the 46th minute off a penalty kick goal by Marco Gonzalez, his 10th of the year. UNLV kept up the pressure in the second half, with 12 total attempts on goal but the majority of the shots were just wide of the goal. The Rebels also hit the post on a header attempt, while an apparent tying score in the final minutes was called off due to a foul on the goalkeeper.
STAT OF THE GAME:Â Grand Canyon finished with just four shots on goal, but two would find the back of the net. UNLV had five shots on goal (17 total for the night), but just one overall score.
QUOTABLE:Â "I was disappointed we gave up two goals in the first half. I think there was great individual effort on the first goal, and a little bit of confusion on a clearance on the second one. But I think at halftime the guys regrouped well, we had confidence when we came back out, we earned a penalty kick in the first minute. I think from there we had 12 chances in the second half, we just have to hit the target, we were wide on all 12 chances. Didn't want to lose this last game for our seniors, was a lot to play for, its a big swing to be playing for fourth and now be the seventh seed. Now we look forward to the first round game on Wednesday next week in Seattle."
