LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV football head coach Tony Sanchez announced 15 future Rebels who signed during Wednesday's initial day of the early national signing period.
"The early part of this signing class is made up of really talented guys, a lot of whom can come in and make an immediate impact," said Sanchez, who heads into his fifth season at the helm of the Rebels. "We have more players coming in at mid-semester than we've ever had at UNLV so we're really excited about the class and their ability to contribute right away to this football team."
This portion of the recruiting class is made up of nine high school players and six junior-college transfers.
Wednesday's haul tilts toward defense with eight players on that side of the ball and seven on offense: 3 DL, 3 LB, 3 OL, 2 DB, 2 WR, 1 RB and 1 QB. No less than nine signees on the list earned a three-star ranking from 247Sports.
"With the full amount of scholarships to give out this year, we have the ability to bring in some older guys to come in and fill some holes. This class, when all is said and done, will lean toward being heavy on defense."
The early group consists of student-athletes whose hometowns are spread among eight states: six from California, two from Nevada, a pair from Louisiana, and one each from Hawai'i, Florida, Texas, Arizona and South Carolina. Two of the signees are products of the same high school program in Louisiana and three players were born outside of the continental U.S. as Ryan Tantum is a native of South Africa, Eliel Ehimare is from Nigeria and Tavai Tuitasi is originally from the territory of American Samoa.
"We did well in our usual footprint but also pulled a guy out of Florida and two guys out of the New Orleans area," said Sanchez. "We signed really good players out of Hawaii and Arizona, which is important. All of our junior college guys are out of California."
UNLV, which is allowed to sign 25 new players, will announce the remainder of its class during the traditional signing period, which begins February 6.
"We have the bulk of our two-deep coming back in 2019 and are talking about 15 guys today who we are excited about adding to that roster. This is a great base heading into the second signing period. There is a little bit more work to be done but when it's all said and done, we'll have 24 or 25 guys coming in who will allow us to play at a high level, continue to move the program forward and help us fight for a championship."
