Football Staff Officially Completed For 2018

March 21, 2018

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV football head coach Tony Sanchez officially completed his staff for 2018 when the school announced Wednesday the additions of run game offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Garin Justice, outside linebackers coach Eric Brown and former Rebel player Steve Irvin who is overseeing the cornerbacks.

Justice spent the last two seasons helping build the FAU program.

"We are fortunate to have brought in a very accomplished offensive line coach," said Sanchez. "Garin Justice is one of the top up-and-coming assistants in the country right now and did a great job building an elite offensive line at FAU."

In 2016, Justice became the offensive line coach for FAU and he was the only assistant retained by new head Lane Kiffin. The Owls finished last season with an 11-3 record that included a Conference USA championship and Boca Raton Bowl victory. FAU finished ranked sixth nationally in rushing (285.3 YPG) and 12th in fewest quarterback sacks allowed as three of Justice's linemen were named first team all-league.

Previous to joining FAU, Justice spent five of his seven seasons at Division II Concord University in West Virginia as head coach, compiling a 40-17 overall mark with the Mountain Lions.

A former second team All-America offensive tackle at West Virginia, Justice earned his bachelor's degree from the school in 2006. He started his coaching career as a student assistant and then a graduate assistant for his alma mater before spending two years on the staff at Florida State in 2007-08.

Brown joined the Rebels in the program's new 10th assistant position after coaching linebackers at Idaho the last five seasons.

"We are excited to bring in Eric Brown as our 10th assistant," said Sanchez. "He is a coach's son with a lot of experience and energy that will help us improve on the defensive side of the ball."

Before joining the Vandals, Brown coached for one year under former UNLV head coach Mike Sanford at FCS program Indiana State. In Terre Haute, Brown was the outside linebackers coach. Among the players under his guidance were two players ranked in the top three in the Missouri Valley Football Conference and top 25 in the FCS in tackles per game.

The son of the late longtime Fresno State assistant and coordinator Dan Brown, Eric played for and graduated from Fresno State. Following his playing career, he served as a student assistant and became a graduate assistant for the Bulldogs after earning his bachelor's degree in 2010.

Irvin returned to Las Vegas after spending the last five seasons as defensive coordinator at the University of San Diego during which the FCS program boasted an overall record of 46-17. He also coached the Toreros' cornerbacks for two seasons from 2011-12. Other stops include a stint overseeing the corners for Texas State, a season at Montana State and time at San Diego State where he earned his master's degree. Irvin began his coaching career at College of the Desert in 1999.

A Southern Nevada native out of Eldorado High School, Irvin began his collegiate playing career as a linebacker at College of the Desert from 1994-95 before competing for one season at Quincy University (NCAA Div. II) in Illinois. He then returned to his hometown and lettered at UNLV in 1998 before earning his bachelor's degree from the school in 1999.

"Steve was one of the up-and-coming young coordinators in the country," said Sanchez. "He did a phenomenal job at USD, including helping his team get a big win over NAU in the first round of the playoffs last year. He has a lot of experience with cornerbacks, has recruited Texas before and is a UNLV and Eldorado alumnus, which are all plusses."

Irvin is believed to be only the third former UNLV player to serve as a full-time football coach at the school. The others were Wayne Nunnely, a 1975 graduate who coached running backs from 1982-85 before taking over as head coach of the program from 1986-89; and longtime college coach Craig Bray, a 1975 graduate who then spent the next fall coaching the Rebel receivers.
