LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's tennis team improved to 8-0 at home this season with a 5-2 win over Marshall Wednesday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels improved to 9-4 overall while the Thundering Herd of Conference USA fell to 2-14.
Marshall only fielded five players, which meant UNLV started the match with walkover wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. The hosts won at the top spot to take the doubles point and then won three matches in singles to reach five overall.
In a battle at the top, Herd player Stephanie Smith rallied in both sets to stun 53rd-ranked Aiwen Zhu, who fell to 10-1 in duals and 19-7 this season. In fact, it marked the UNLV junior's first loss at the top of the lineup during a dual match since April 23, 2016.
REBEL OF THE MATCH: En-Pei Huang teamed with Zhu to win the clinching doubles point at the top spot and then swept Marija Bogicevic, 6-3, 6-2, on court three to improve to 18-10 in singles.
STAT OF THE MATCH: With the upset loss, Aiwen Zhu's record at the No. 1 singles position fell to 20-2 in her career as a Rebel.
QUOTABLE: "Even short-handed, Marshall came out ready to battle today so it was nice to get the win."
-UNLV Head Coach Kevin Cory
