LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV freshman Avi'Tal Perteete returns to the track Friday evening in the second heat of the 800m prelims at the NCAA Indoor Championships after nearly two weeks off from competition. Perteete is one of 16 collegiate student-athletes that hope to be one of eight that advance to Saturday's event final at Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station.
The freshman from Oakland, California, qualified for the national meet after running a 2:04.01@ in the 800m and taking second place at the Mountain West's Indoor Championships on February 24. Her time is the 14th best in the nation and third best amongst freshmen.
Perteete will run against fellow MW foe Sadi Henderson from Boise State as well as two participants from Clemson and one each from Middle Tennessee State, Northern Arizona, Texas A&M and Virginia Tech. The first heat, which starts at 7:25 pm CT (5:25 pm PT), features one more from MTSU and TAMU, plus Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Penn State, Stanford and Villanova.
Saturday's 800m final is slated to start at 5:40 pm CT (3:40 pm PT).
This is the second straight year that the Rebel track & field program will have a student-athlete compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Current senior Destiny Smith-Barnett, also from Oakland, finished 14th in the 60m en route to 2017 USTFCCCA All-America Second Team honors.
