Rebels Face Aztecs On Heroes Weekend At Eller Media Stadium

April 5, 2018

SAN DIEGO STATE (10-23, 1-5) at UNLV (21-13, 3-6)
Eller Media Stadium
Las Vegas, NV

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV softball returns home this weekend after a four-game road trip to host San Diego State for a three-game set, April 6-8. It will be "Heroes Weekend" at Eller Media Stadium, with special promotions in honor of first responders and those that serve in the military. All weekend long, first responders and military will receive two free tickets to each game. The first 150 fans to Friday's series opener at 6 p.m. will be given camouflage drawstring backpacks, while Saturday and Sunday's fans can pick up the first series of softball trading cards on their way into the ballpark. Saturday's first pitch is set for 4 p.m. and Sunday series finale will get underway at noon.

The Rebels played their lone mid-week game of the season at San Diego Tuesday and came away with a 6-4 win, which ended a five-game losing skid by UNLV. The victory happened in comeback fashion as the Scarlet and Gray trailed 4-3 entering the sixth inning and scored three runs over the final two frames to grab the win. The contest was UNLV's last non-conference matchup of 2018 with the Rebels finishing 18-7 outside of the Mountain West this season.

The Rebel offense got back on track against the Toreros, scoring six runs in five innings during the game after scoring just seven total in their last five contests. With the Mountain West's last-place team coming to town this weekend, the Scarlet and Gray will hope that offensive success from Tuesday will carry over to the series against San Diego State.

While UNLV snapped its five-game losing streak this week, it will still be looking to end a stretch of five consecutive Mountain West losses and two straight conference series losses. The Aztecs enter the weekend in the cellar of the league standings with just one MW victory after two conference series. The league's preseason favorites have struggled this season at 10-23 overall, with its offense, defense and pitching all ranking towards the bottom of the league.

After this weekend, the Rebels will be halfway through the conference slate, with road trips to Boise State and Fresno State and home weekends against UNR and Colorado State still on the schedule.

QUICK HITTERS
• The Rebels snapped a five-game losing streak with Tuesday's win at San Diego.
• UNLV finished its 2018 non-conference slate with a 18-7 record overall.
• UNLV's 20-8 record through the first 28 game was the program's best start since the 1996 squad had the same record to start the season.
• UNLV has only committed 23 errors in 34 games this season, while their opponents have committed 46.
• The Rebels enter the weekend having lost its last two MW series - a span that includes five straight league losses.
• If the Rebels can score first, they have a good shot to win as they are 15-2 when that occurs. They had started the season 13-0 in that category, but have gone 2-2 since in those instances.
• The Rebels have only lost once when they've out-hit their opponent at 15-1, but are 5-11 when out-hit by their opponents.
• Season Streaks: The Rebels have two separate four-game win streaks, while their longest losing streak in 2018 is five games.
• Individual Streaks: Junior Myranda Bueno, who returned to the lineup against New Mexico March 16-18 after suffering a facial injury in Houston, has the longest hitting streak of the season at 10. Senior Brooke Stover entered the weekend at SJSU with a nine game hitting streak, but that ended in the series opener against the Spartans. Freshman Mia Trejo reached base safely in 13 straight games, which is the longest such streak this season.
• Offense bounces back against the Toreros: The Rebels scored six runs against over five innings against USD after having scored seven total runs in its five previous games and had score just five in 34 innings entering the game. After hitting .150 with runners in scoring position in the sweep at SJSU, the Rebels hit .300 in those situations against the Toreros.
• While the offense has seen some struggles over the last seven games, Trejo has had success, hitting at a .429 clip with nine hits, two RBI, two runs scored and one double. Against USD she went 2-for-4 with one RBI and was also UNLV's top performer at San Jose State as she went 5-for-8 with one RBI and one run scored. In two of the three losses to the Spartans, she was responsible for half of the Rebel hits.
• Senior Janine Petmecky bounced back in a big way Tuesday against San diego. The right-hander entered the game in relief in the fourth inning with the Rebels down 4-3. She pitched four scoreless frames with three strikeouts, which allowed the UNLV offense to come alive. For good measure, she even gave herself some breathing room, hitting a solo home run in the seventh to put UNLV up two. It was her first home run of the season and the Rebels' first since March 16. With the win, Petmecky snapped a three-game losing streak of her own to move to 13-5 on the year.
• UNLV's comeback victory over San Diego was its third of the season and marked just the second win after trailing thru four innings as the Rebels were 1-7 in those instances coming into the game
• The Rebel pitching staff has a combined 2.90 ERA, which is second in the Mountain West, despite the recent string of conference losses. • Senior third baseman Jade Yadao-Valdez is third on the team with a career-high .333 average this season and is tied for second with 30 hits. Against Utah State a few weeks ago, she swiped her 13th stolen base of the season, marking a new career high.

• After having one run-rule victory all of last season, the Rebels already have four this season, which included two straight from the series finale in New Mexico to the series opener against Utah State.
• The Rebels swept the Mountain West weekly honors on March 13 with Petmecky earning Pitcher of the Week and Yadao-Valdez earning Player of the Week. It marked the first pitcher of the week and second player of the week honor for UNLV this season as freshman Samantha Diaz already earned the honor once this season on Feb. 21. It marked just the third time since 2011 a pair of Rebels have earned the honor in the same week.
• The Rebels have two come-from-behind extra-inning walk-off wins this season (6-5 over Buffalo in the eighth inning on Feb. 16 and a 3-2 walk-off win over North Dakota State on Friday, Feb. 9) and added a third comeback win in Houston with a 6-5 win over UTSA thanks to a three-run top of the seventh.
