UNLV men's soccer improved to 5-2 on the season after posting a 3-2 road victory at UC Riverside Friday night from the UCR Soccer Stadium.
UNLV recorded a pair of first half goals and led 2-0 going into halftime. The Highlanders would cut into the lead in the 56th minute with a goal on a set piece off a corner kick. The Rebels then responded with a score in the 63rd minute for a two-goal advantage. UCR quickly answered back to close within one, but were held out of the goal for the rest of the game to give the visiting UNLV squad the victory.
REBEL OF THE GAME: Sophomore midfielder
Marco Gonzalez had a team-high three points against the Highlanders. On the Rebels' first goal, he assisted (along with
Timo Mehlich) on
Bay Kurtz's score that put UNLV up 1-0. He followed that with a score of his own from eight-yards out in the 38th minute for a 2-0 advantage.
STAT OF THE GAME: Though UCR held a 15-13 edge on shots, including 11-7 in the second half, the Rebels led in shots on goal, by a 9-7 margin.
QUOTABLE:
"Very pleased with our offense tonight, we were able to create a lot of chances and we got three goals, which should always be enough to win a game. Not our strongest defensive game tonight. But we were very explosive, especially in the first half. In the second half the momentum shifted to UC Riverside and they were able to convert, so those are somethings we have to work on as we move closer to the start of conference play. I also want to acknowledge the great support we had tonight, we probably had about 40 members of the Rebel Mafia come down to tailgate before the game and then cheer us on, and we expect a much bigger turnout for our game on Sunday against San Diego."
- UNLV Head Coach Rich Ryerson
REBEL NOTES:
* The Rebels' third score of the game came from sophomore
Jesus Partida, while Mehlich and Kurtz were both credited with assists.
* It was the first goal of the season for Partida, and the first game-winner in his career.
* Gonzalez posted his sixth goal of the season in the victory, which ranks him second in the WAC.
* UNLV is a perfect 4-0 on Friday night games this season.
* UNLV is just one win away from reaching 400 total victories in its 45 year-history.
NEXT FOR THE REBELS: UNLV closes out the weekend with a Sunday, Sept. 16 contest at 5 pm at San Diego. Sunday's game will have a live stream available through Stadium as well as through UNLVRebels.com.
