LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV senior standout Aiwen Zhu, the defending Mountain West Player of the Year, won twice on Friday to stay alive in the elite field at 17th Annual Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
 
Zhu, who came into the event unranked, opened play by knocking off third-seeded and 49th-ranked Anna Turati of Texas, 6-3, 7-5. She then fought off Caroline Lampl from top-ranked Stanford, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2, to move into Saturday's quarterfinals where she will meet Marlee Zein of Florida.
 
Fellow-Rebel senior Anna Bogoslavets also notched a ranked win over a Longhorn with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over fifth-seeded and 63^rd-ranked Tijana Spasojevic. Bogoslavets, however, fell to Stanford's Melissa Lord in the Round of 16, 6-2, 6-2. UNLV sophomore Izumi Asano also won her first match, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 over Florida's Sydney Berlin, before bowing out in the next round, 6-4, 6-1, to fourth-seeded and 53^rd-ranekd Petra Granic of Texas.
 
The hosts have two players remaining in Flight Two as Alex Kalachova downed Katie LaFrance of UCLA, 6-0, 6-2, and Samantha Li enjoyed a bye.
 
In doubles play, UNLV split a pair of first round matches as Zhu and En-Pei Huang got past the Longhorn duo of Turati and Katie Poluta, 7-5.
 
Individual competitors this weekend hail from teams that include half of the top dozen from the season's initial ITA rankings: No. 1 Stanford, No. 3 North Carolina, No. 6 Texas, No. 7 Pepperdine, No. 8 UCLA and No. 11 Florida.
 
Action gets underway Saturday with doubles at 10 a.m. Admission to all matches is free of charge.
