UNLV Doubles Team To Play For Title Sunday

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV's top doubles team of Aiwen Zhu and En-Pei Huang will play for the doubles crown on Sunday at 17th Annual Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The Rebel team, which came into the weekend unranked, advanced Saturday by upsetting No. 43 Anastasia Iamachkine and Jessica Failla of Pepperdine – the same Waves duo that shocked the nation's No. 7 doubles team from Stanford in Friday's first round.

UNLV will not have to play its Sunday semifinal match because its opponent, third-seeded and 12th-ranked Jada Hart and Elysia Bolton of UCLA, withdrew after an injury. Zhu and Huang will face the winner of Sunday morning's other semifinal between Melissa Lord and Niluka Madurawe of Stanford and Fernanda Labrana and Bojana Markovic of Texas.

The doubles final is scheduled to begin at approximately 11 a.m. Admission to all matches is free of charge.

Zhu, however, was not as fortunate in singles play on Saturday as the senior was ousted in the quarterfinals of the main draw, 7-6, 6-4, by Florida's Marlee Zein. Two other Rebels, Samantha Li and Alex Kalachova, both lost their semifinal outing in Flight Two.

Individual competitors this weekend hail from teams that include half of the top dozen from the season's initial ITA rankings: No. 1 Stanford, No. 3 North Carolina, No. 6 Texas, No. 7 Pepperdine, No. 8 UCLA and No. 11 Florida.
