FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV track & field's
Destiny Smith-Barnett ran a program- and personal-best 7.17 in the 60m en route to one of six wins by the Rebels at Northern Arizona's Lumberjack Team Challenge at the Walkup. Skydome Friday. The Scarlet & Gray was also victorious in the 400m, 800m, 4x400m relay, 60m hurdles and triple jump, and had 28 top-eight finishes at the one-day meet.
Not only was Smith-Barnett's time a Rebel record, but it also tied the Mountain West mark held by Ashley Henderson (2017/San Diego State) and Jessica Young (2011/TCU). Her time of 7.17 is the best registered by an NCAA Division I student-athlete in the 60m this season and it is also tied for first in the world standings with former Kentucky student-athlete Javianne Oliver.
Jonon Young won the triple jump with a distance of 39-10.75 (12.16m), which ranks fourth all-time in the program's indoor performance list.
Avi'Tal Wilson-Perteete had a hand in two of UNLV's wins with a first-place finish in the 400m (56.01), while running a leg of the triumphant 4x400m relay (3:46.27) along with Najia and
Nylia Hudspeth, and Alexis Surrell.
Jada Hicks and
Elisa Rovere were also victorious for the Rebels, as the former won the 60m hurdles – for the second straight week – with a time of 8.34, while the latter claimed the 800m in 2:18.35.
QUOTABLE: "I am really pleased with this all-team opener for the Rebels," said head coach
Yvonne Wade. "We saw a lot of good things and a lot we still need to work on, but overall we are happy with the results. Some of our newcomers needed a chance to get the nerves out at their first collegiate meet."
NOTES:
-

-
Mackenna Howard finished third in both the weight throw (58-4.00/17.78m) and shot put (49-9.75/15.18m); the weight throw mark was a personal best.
