Box Score LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV volleyball team rallied back from a two-set deficit to complete the come-from-behind victory over the Boise State Broncos Saturday at the Cox Pavilion. The Rebels, who won by set scores of 23-25, 18-25, 28-26, 25-23, 15-13, were paced by double-doubles from
Lauryn Burt,
Shelby Capllonch and
Mariena Hayden in the Mountain West affair.
With the win, the Scarlet & Gray upped its season-best win streak to four matches and, conversely, improve its conference mark to 4-2 and its overall record to 8-9. The Broncos, on the other hand, had their two-match win streak snapped, while they also sit 4-2 in the MW and 12-5 on the year.
The Rebels were outhit by 77 points (.219 to .296); primarily, due to their attackers committing 12 more errors (28-16) despite owning advantages in kills (70-69) and attempts (192-179). UNLV produced two of its best hitting displays in the third and fifth sets with .286 and .273 efficiencies, respectively, and stayed within a stretch of .163 (second) and .212 (first) in the three other frames. Boise State surpassed the .300-barrier twice with a .364 in the second and a .317 in the third, and were held to .190 (fifth) to .290 (first).
UNLV's offense had five players record double-digits in kills with a team-high 15 coming from Hayden, who also notched 17 digs to register her sixth straight double-double of the year. Capllonch also produced a double-double, combining 13 kills with a team-high 21 digs. The Rebels also got 13 kills from
Erin Davis, 12 from
Alison French and 10 more from
Kate Brennan.
Antonette Rolda and Burt split the setting duties with the former dishing out 36 assists to the latter's 28. Additionally, Burt added a career-high 15 digs.
TURNING POINT – THIRD SET: Moments after Boise State rattled off a three-point run to force a match-point opportunity at 24-22, UNLV got kills from Brennan and Hayden as well as a Bronco attack error to turn the tide and give itself a set-point chance at 25-24. The Broncos managed to stave off two set points, but couldn't manage a third, as Hayden scored the final two points off a kill and an ace to extend the match to a fourth set.
TURNING POINT – FOURTH SET: With the score knotted at 17-all following a kill by Boise State, UNLV pushed ahead for good off kills from Brennan and Capllonch. The Broncos got within one point five times – even at 24-23 – but couldn't find the equalizer as Davis closed out the fourth with a kill.
TURNING POINT – FIFTH SET: The Broncos scored the first point of the set, but the Rebels countered with three of their own off a kill by French and a pair of attack errors. UNLV managed to hold a slight edge up until Boise State drew even at 13-all only to see Brennan and Davis throw down kills to complete the comeback.
