Box Score RENO, Nev. (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV volleyball team maintained its winning ways Saturday, recording a 3-1, road victory over the UNR Wolf Pack in the opening tilt of this year's Silver State Series presented by IBEW Local 401 and Nevada Donor Network. The Rebels, who have now won six straight – all against Mountain West opposition, claimed the four-set affair behind set scores of 25-21, 20-25, 25-21, 25-20.
By virtue of the win, UNLV improved its overall record to 10-9 and 6-2 in the MW. UNR, on the other hand, sits 14-6 on the year and 4-4 in conference play after it suffered its third consecutive defeat.
The Scarlet & Gray outhit the Wolf Pack by 22 points (.230 to .208) with help from nine more kills (53-44) in five more attack attempts (135-130); however, their offense also committed five more errors (22-17). UNLV saved its best hitting display for the fourth set, recording a .395 efficiency with 19 kills against two errors in 43 swings. The Rebels began the bout with a .290 effort, but followed with .083 and .080 clips in the second and third, respectively. UNR topped out at .317 in the fourth, but was held between .242 (second set) to .077 (third) the remainder of the affair.
Mariena Hayden paced the Rebels with her eighth straight double-double, which came off a pairing of 20 kills and 15 digs. Hayden also added two aces and two assisted blocks.
Additionally, the trio of
Kate Brennan,
Shelby Capllonch and
Alison French combined for 26 kills in the win. Both Capllonch and French had nine, while Brennan had eight. Setters
Lauryn Burt and
Antonette Rolda dished out a total of 50 assists with the former credited with 28 to the latter's 22.
REBEL NOTES:
- The match featured only eight ties and four lead changes. The first and third frames were void of either statistic, while the second had two of each and the fourth had six ties and tow lead changes.
- UNLV has now won three straight and four of the last five; thus, upping its overall lead in the head-to-head series to 14 matches, with the series sitting 24-10 in its favor.
- UNLV improved to 3-4 in four-set matches this season.
- Hayden had two aces in the match to bump her career tally to 192; thus, upping her UNLV and Mountain West record number.
- Hayden's 15 digs moved her into ninth place in the program's career record book with 883, surpassing Kela Lau Hee's 878 amassed from 2007-10.
UP NEXT: UNLV returns to Las Vegas and the Cox Pavilion for a four-match homestand that will span the next two weeks. The Rebels will host New Mexico and Air Force this upcoming Tuesday and Thursday, respectively, with first serve slated for 6:30 pm in both contests. The following week, Fresno State and San Diego State will come to town on Oct. 31 and Nov. 2.
