LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV's contingent had a middling first day in singles play Wednesday at the 2019 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region Championships being held at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on campus.
 
Members from 20 western teams are facing off as individuals through Sunday on 12 courts each day in both singles and doubles.
 
In the top flight of singles eighth-seeded Izumi Asano fell in straight sets in her opener while En-Pei Huang defeated Idaho State's Alexandra Arkhipov 6-0, 6-0 and Connie Li fell to UTEP's Vanessa Valdez, 5-, 6-4, 6-3. In the second flight, Samantha Li and Hsuan Yu Lin won their openers while Sara Alajbegovic enjoyed a bye. Two other Rebels fell in the first round.
 
UNLV advanced all four of its doubles teams, however, led by seventh-seeded Asano and Huang winning their opener vs. a duo from Weber State, 8-3.
 
The second round of doubles will kick off the action on Thursday followed by two rounds of singles. The finals are set for Sunday. Admission to all matches is free of charge.
 
The ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top men's and women's players across the country. More than 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete across 85 ITA Regional Championships around the country. In Division I, regional doubles champions and regional singles champions and finalists qualify for the season-ending Oracle ITA National Fall Championships.
